תּוֹלְדֹת (toledot) is Genesis's key structural marker, often translated "generations" but carrying the fuller sense of "family record" or "the account of what came from." Its use here — and again in v.19 for Yitzchak/Isaac — creates a deliberate literary parallel: Yishmael's/Ishmael's line receives its full honour before the narrative pivots to the line of promise, showing that YHWH's care extends beyond the covenant heir.
