"Yarech" (thigh) is a euphemism for the genitals — the seat of procreation — and, in Avraham's case, the very flesh where the covenant of circumcision was cut (Gen 17). To swear by the thigh is to invoke the Abrahamic covenant itself. The same solemn gesture recurs in Gen 47:29 when Jacob binds Joseph.
