מְצַחֵק (metsachek): The verb shares the same root as Yitzchak and tsechoq — this child is doing precisely what Isaac's name means. The word can signify playing, laughing, or mocking, and the text is deliberately ambiguous. The LXX adds "with her son Isaac," and in Galatians 4:29 Paul interprets the scene as persecution. The tension between innocent play and hostile mockery cannot be fully resolved from the Hebrew alone; both translations render it as "laughing" so the wordplay on Yitzchak's name rings clearly without forcing the negative reading on the reader.
