חֶמְאָה (chem'ah) — often rendered "butter," but more precisely refers to fermented or curdled milk — something akin to thick yoghurt, leben, or cultured dairy curds. The detail that the divine visitors actually ate is theologically weighty: this is a genuine, embodied theophany — not a vision or an interior experience. Both versions render "curds" to distinguish from butter and preserve the culinary specificity of the original.
