נֶפֶשׁ (nephesh) denotes the whole integrated living being — from the throat that breathes and hungers to the total self that exists in community — not "soul" in any Greek dualist sense. The formal penalty of כָּרֵת (karet, "cutting off") was likely expulsion from the covenant community and, in some traditions, divine premature death — a severing that mirrors the covenant-cutting rite of Gen. 15 where those who break covenant are "cut" like the animals. The FOG preserves "nephesh" to honour this wholistic anthropology; the FOG Message uses the implied "person."
