אֵל רֳאִי (El Ro'i) = "God of Seeing" or "The God Who Sees Me." The second clause הֲגַם הֲלֹם רָאִיתִי אַחֲרֵי רֹאִי is one of the most difficult sentences in Genesis, likely meaning "Have I truly seen God here and survived?" — echoing the ancient dread that to see God face-to-face meant death (cf. Exodus 33:20; Judges 13:22). FOG renders her awe and bewilderment; FOG Message draws out the wonder of surviving the encounter. Most remarkably, this is the only place in Scripture where a human being gives God a name — and that person is a slave woman, alone in the desert.
