vayevater (וַיְבַתֵּר) — from batar, the technical term for the ancient covenant-cutting ceremony, attested also in Jer. 34:18-19, where parties 'cut the calf in two and pass between its parts,' implicitly swearing, 'May I become like these carcasses if I break this covenant.' The devastating significance of v.17 — where only YHWH passes through — is only legible against this ritual background.
