Al pnei (עַל-פְּנֵי) literally means "before the face of" — Haran died while his father could still see him, a devastating inversion of the natural order. F.O.G preserves the idiom's physicality; F.O.G Message renders the functional meaning for modern readers. Ur Kasdim ("Ur of the Chaldeans") is the great Sumerian city of southern Mesopotamia. The designation "Chaldeans" is somewhat anachronistic for the patriarchal period — the Chaldeans rose to political prominence centuries later — and is generally understood as editorial updating to orient later Israelite readers geographically.
