The phrase πίστεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (pisteōs Iēsou Christou) sits at the centre of a major ongoing scholarly debate. As a genitive construction it can be read as an objective genitive — "faith in the Messiah Jesus" (our faith directed toward Him) — or as a subjective genitive — "the faithfulness of Jesus the Messiah" (His own covenant-obedience enacted in His death). The F.O.G renders it subjectively ("the faithfulness of Yeshua the Mashiach"), pointing to the Messiah's own act of trusting obedience as the ground of the promise. The F.O.G Message renders it objectively ("faith in Jesus the Messiah"), emphasising the human response of believing. Both readings are linguistically valid; the debate turns on Pauline theology, not grammar alone.
