Footnotes

The absence of Levites is a crisis — not a bureaucratic oversight. The Levites were the backbone of Temple worship: musicians, gatekeepers, and teachers of Torah. A community setting out to rebuild God's house without Levites is like a choir with no voices. Ezra's immediate mobilisation to recruit them (vv.16–20) reveals his pastoral urgency. The 'three days' of assembly before the discovery also echoes other biblical moments of preparation preceding divine action (cf. Josh. 1:11; Ezra 8:32), suggesting the delay was itself providential: without those three days, the gap would never have been found.
