אָשָׁם (*asham*) — 'guilt offering' — was the prescribed sacrifice for reparable violations of covenant law (Lev. 5–6), requiring both restitution and a sacrificial ram. Its use here is remarkable: even deliberate sin was not beyond the reach of Torah's restorative provision. The ram of the *asham* carries an inescapable echo of the ram caught in the thicket at Moriah (Gen. 22:13), the substitutionary logic of the altar pointing always toward the greater redemption. FOG and FOG Message both retain 'guilt offering' for precision.
