הַתַּמּוּז (*haTammuz*) — Tammuz is the Sumerian/Akkadian dying-and-rising deity (Sumerian: Dumuzi), shepherd-consort of Inanna, whose annual descent to the underworld was ritually mourned by women in midsummer. The fourth month of the Hebrew calendar bears his name to this day. That this lament takes place at the entrance to YHWH's temple is the chapter's most visceral syncretistic collapse: Israel's women performing Mesopotamian grief over a dead god in the precincts of the living One. For FOG Message the typological resonance is rich — Tammuz is a counterfeit dying god; YHWH is the God who actually defeats death. FOG retains the Hebrew article 'the Tammuz'; FOG Message treats it as a straightforward proper name.
