The image of survivors as יוֹנֵי הַגֵּאָיוֹת (*yonei hagayot*, "doves of the ravines") is achingly poignant. In Hebrew culture the dove was associated with tenderness, innocence, and longing—the lover hides in the clefts of rock in the Song of Songs (2:14). Here, the once-proud citizens of Yerushalayim are reduced to solitary, trembling birds hiding in gorges. There is no communal lament, no chorus of mourning; each person is alone with their own guilt. This individualisation of sin anticipates the full theology of personal accountability that Ezekiel will unfold in chapter 18.
