נְבֵלָה (nevelah) — an animal that died without proper ritual slaughter, rendering it unclean. טְרֵפָה (trefah) — an animal torn by a wild beast, also unclean. These two terms form the basis of Jewish dietary law to this day: 'treif' (from trefah) has become the general colloquial term for any non-kosher food in Jewish culture. The priests, as those who mediate between the holy and the common, must maintain the highest standard of purity even in their eating — the body of the kohen is itself an instrument of priestly vocation, and what enters it matters.
