עָב עֵץ (*av etz*, 'thick wood') is a somewhat obscure term; the LXX renders it as a threshold or heavy beam, while other interpreters see a projecting wooden portico or canopy sheltering the entrance. The detail is significant: even the outermost face of the sanctuary — the threshold where worshippers first arrive — is architecturally marked and covered. Approach to YHWH is sheltered from the very first step. FOG renders 'thick wooden canopy'; FOG Message uses 'heavy wooden canopy.'
