Whether the binding with עֲבוֹתוֹת (*avotot*, ropes or cords) is literal or visionary, interpreters have long debated. What is theologically clear is that the constraint is divinely imposed: YHWH immobilises His messenger to enact the inescapability of the siege itself. The city cannot turn from its fate; neither can the prophet turn his body. The physical limitation becomes a parable of divine inevitability. This bodily restriction parallels Ezekiel's enforced muteness (3:26), suggesting a sustained pattern of the prophet's body as prophetic text.
