The *tziyyun* (marker, cairn, signpost — the same word used for a grave-marker in 2 Kings 23:17) beside unburied bones reflects the deep ancient concern for corpse defilement. Under Torah law, contact with a human bone renders one unclean for seven days (Num. 19:16). The elaborate logistics — search squads, burial teams, and individual grave-markers — communicate the almost incomprehensible scale of the slaughter. The bureaucratic thoroughness is itself a theological statement: YHWH's promised victory is so total it requires months of organised administration to contain it. Both translations render *tziyyun* as "marker."
