Heb. פְּרָזוֹת (perazot) — 'open country, rural settlements, unwalled towns.' The word conveys not merely lack of fortification but pastoral vulnerability — communities that have outgrown the need for defences because of deep-rooted security. It appears again in Zech. 2:8, where Jerusalem is said to 'dwell as open country' because of its overflowing population and divine protection. Here, that very openness is what makes Israel prey. FOG renders 'open country,' preserving the spatial, unfortified sense; FOG Message uses 'unwalled villages' for its more vivid, inhabited feel.
