The interpretation is explicit: the bones represent the exiled community of Yisra'el in Babylon — primarily a national metaphor, not a direct promise of individual bodily resurrection (though later Jewish and Christian theology will legitimately read that layer here too). The triple declaration of hopelessness — dried up, lost, cut off — mirrors the finality of death. *Nigzarnu lanu* ('we are cut off to ourselves') may echo Lam. 3:54, linking Ezekiel's vision to the raw grief of the Lamentations tradition.
