The cedar's *tzel* (צֵל, 'shade' or 'shadow') is a loaded political image throughout the Hebrew prophets — to sit 'in the shadow' of a great power is to be under its protection and patronage (cf. Judges 9:15; Lamentations 4:20; Daniel 4:12). The image is simultaneously glorious and ominous: what appears as shelter is in fact dependence on a power that can fall. FOG renders 'shade' to keep the naturalistic image alive; FOG Message preserves the same, allowing the political freight to resonate beneath the surface.
