טֻמְאָה (tum'ah) — ritual and moral impurity or uncleanness — is a stronger, more theologically loaded term than חֶלְאָה (chel'ah). Setting the pot empty so the heat acts on the bare metal itself pictures a people in whom no reformable material remains — only the vessel's own guilt. The imagery anticipates the prophetic vision that only total judgement can produce something clean. FOG renders "impurity" to preserve the ritual-theological register; FOG Message uses "corruption" for immediate moral resonance.
