סִיגִים (sigim) is the waste residue—dross or slag—that separates from pure metal during the smelting process. It is worthless and discarded. Isaiah uses the identical image for faithless Israel: 'Your silver has become dross' (Isa 1:22). The irony is searing: Yerushalayim was meant to be refined silver—the purified people of YHWH—but has become the very substance the refining process removes. FOG retains 'dross' alongside the Hebrew; FOG Message uses 'slag' to heighten the industrial ugliness of the metaphor.
