Yechezkel's complaint reveals the central tension of symbolic prophecy: the people have heard the metaphor but have insulated themselves from its application to their own reality. The word mashal (מָשָׁל) encompasses parable, proverb, and similitude—an indirect form of truth-telling designed to bypass hardened defences. Their dismissal of him as a 'spinner of parables' is itself an act of hardness: they reduce prophetic urgency to literary performance. FOG renders 'spinner of parables' to capture the dismissive, almost mocking tone in the people's use of the term; FOG Message uses 'riddles and stories' to convey how thoroughly they are trivialising the prophetic message.
