The *kephir* (כְּפִיר) is a young male lion in his prime strength — not a helpless whelp, but a predator fully come into his power. The shift from *gur* (גּוּר, a suckling cub) to *kephir* marks the moment of dangerous maturity. This first cub corresponds historically to Yeho'ahaz, son of Yoshiyahu, who reigned a mere three months before being deported to Mitzrayim (2 Kings 23:31–34). His brief, violent reign is compressed into the verb *taraph* (טָרַף) — to rend, tear prey — the language of predatory violence, not measured conquest.
