*Neshek* (נֶשֶׁךְ, literally 'a bite') and *tarbit* (תַּרְבִּית, 'increase') are paired economic terms consistently condemned in the Torah (Lev. 25:36–37; Deut. 23:19–20). *Neshek* likely describes interest charged upfront; *tarbit* the profit extracted over time — together they comprehensively condemn exploitative lending. In an agrarian subsistence economy where debt could strip a family of land and reduce members to bond-service, this was a matter of communal life and death, not merely financial ethics. FOG retains the economic specificity of both terms; FOG Message uses 'excessive fees' to underscore the exploitative dimension.
