Ancient Near Eastern birth customs included salting a newborn — documented in Rabbinic literature (b. Shabbat 129b) and attested in wider ANE practice — believed to firm the skin and mark the child as belonging to the living community. Swaddling was standard infant care (cf. Luke 2:7). The absence of all these rites signals utter abandonment: no one performed even the minimum obligations of care.
