This second proverb (vv. 27–28) is more sophisticated than the first (v. 22). Where the first dismissed prophecy as meaningless, this one acknowledges it as potentially true — but safely remote, irrelevant to the present generation. The people push fulfilment into the eschatological distance, neutralising its urgency. This is the pastoral danger of over-postponed eschatology: prophetic truth becomes academic rather than urgent. Ezekiel's response in verse 28 collapses the temporal distance entirely.
