Eretz megurim ("land of their sojournings") derives from the root gur, to dwell as a resident alien — a foreigner without full legal status or permanent claim. The same verse uses this root twice (megurim asher garu vah — "their sojournings in which they sojourned"), a deliberate echo emphasising that the patriarchs were perpetual gerim (foreigners) in their own promised land. The F.O.G preserves the literal "sojournings"; the F.O.G Message expands to capture the pathos: the promise held, but the possession did not.
