Tzivotam derives from tzava — army, host, mustered force. The Israelites leave not as a ragged band of refugees but as an army marching out in formation, under divine command. The F.O.G renders "host by host" to preserve the military register; the F.O.G Message uses "division by division" for clarity. This framing anticipates the designation Tzivot YHWH ("the armies/hosts of YHWH") in Exod 12:41 — the Exodus is presented as a divine military campaign, not merely an escape.
