עֲשֶׂרֶת הַדְּבָרִים (aseret ha-devarim) = "the Ten Words"—the precise Hebrew designation for the Decalogue; "commandments" (mitzvot) is not the term used here. The subject of "he wrote" (וַיִּכְתֹּב) is ambiguous: v.27 commands Moshe to write, but Exod 31:18 and 32:16 attribute the writing to Elohim—both versions allow the ambiguity to stand. The forty days without bread or water echoes Moshe's first ascent (Exod 24:18), anticipates Elijah's wilderness fast (1 Kgs 19:8), and foreshadows Yeshua's forty-day testing (Matt 4:2).
