נֶפֶשׁ הַגֵּר (nefesh ha-ger): nephesh in its most embodied sense means throat, breath, hunger, life — the raw experience of a living creature in need. To "know the nephesh of the sojourner" is not abstract empathy; it is bodily, gut-level memory of vulnerability, displacement, and dependence. F.O.G renders "very being" to capture this full-person resonance; F.O.G Message says "in your very bones" to make the visceral nature of the memory felt. The legal foundation for protecting the alien is not sentimental generosity but shared suffering remembered in the body — Israel's own nephesh knows what it is to be powerless and foreign.
