נַעַר (na'ar) — typically "youth" or "young lad," used here for what is clearly an infant. The LXX renders it παιδίον (paidion, "little child"). The use of na'ar for a baby may reflect colloquial usage for any male child, or the narrator may already be casting the infant in the light of the great man he will become. וַתַּחְמֹל (vatachmol) — from חָמַל (chamal), a tender, gut-level compassion that compels action, often used of sparing or showing mercy to the helpless.
