חֹדֶשׁ (chodesh) means both "month" and "new moon," since each month was reckoned from the new moon's appearance. The FOG renders "new moon" to preserve this calendrical precision. The timing — approximately fifty days after Passover — places Israel's arrival at Sinai in the window later associated with Shavuot (Pentecost), traditionally celebrated as the giving of the Torah. The phrase "on that very day" (בַּיּוֹם הַזֶּה) echoes the Exodus narratives and marks the moment as divinely appointed, not incidental.
