מָרָה (Marah) = 'bitter' — the place-name is a pun on the water's character. The narrative irony is acute: three days after Israel's greatest song of deliverance, the water is מָרָה — the same root (מרר, marar) used for Israel's bitter slave-labour in Mitzrayim (Ex. 1:14). Naomi later takes this same name for herself in grief (Ruth 1:20), drawing on the same well of resonance.
