חֲמֻשִׁים (chamushim) — one of the most contested terms in the Exodus narrative, with three major traditions: (1) "armed/equipped for battle" (LXX, Peshitta, Targum Onkelos); (2) "in ranks of five/in battle formation" (from חֲמֵשׁ, "five," some rabbinic readings); (3) "only one fifth" of Israel left Egypt, the rest having perished (Mechilta). Both versions follow the dominant tradition (armed), with FOG adding "for battle" to encompass the formation sense. יַם סוּף (Yam Suf) — traditionally rendered "Red Sea" (LXX: Ἐρυθρὰ θάλασσα) but the Hebrew literally means "Sea of Reeds/Rushes" (סוּף = reeds, the same plant among which baby Moshe floated in Ex. 2:3). FOG preserves the Hebrew; FOG Message renders "Sea of Reeds" to restore geographical and textual accuracy.
