Translations
So this shall be like a sign on your hand and emblems between your eyes—for it was by His mighty hand that Yahweh brought us out of Egypt.
It shall be as a sign upon your hand and as totafot between your eyes, for with a mighty hand YHWH brought us out from Mitzrayim.
And it shall be for a token upon thine hand, and for frontlets between thine eyes: for by strength of hand the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt.
So it shall serve as a sign on your hand and a symbol on your forehead, for with a mighty hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt.”
Footnotes
טוֹטָפֹת (totafot) — a rare and etymologically contested word appearing only three times in Scripture. Its origins may be Akkadian, Egyptian, or an early Hebrew term for a head-band or frontal ornament bound between the eyes. FOG preserves the Hebrew transliteration to honour its specificity and avoid anachronism; FOG Message renders it "emblems", the ornament that rabbinic tradition developed into tefillin. This verse is one of the four key proof-texts for the practice of wearing tefillin—a physical embodiment of the command to keep the Exodus story permanently "between the eyes."
