Jean Paul Joseph is the lead editor of the F.O.G Bible Project. He works from a personal encounter with Jesus first, then draws on the scholarship of respected Jewish and Christian scholars — because the church was Jewish before it was anything else, and those roots change everything about how you read Scripture.

σαπρός (sapros) — "rotten/putrid/decayed" — is used of rotten fruit and spoiled fish. The image is visceral: unwholesome speech is like decomposing food brought to the table. The final clause — ἵνα δῷ χάριν τοῖς ἀκούουσιν, "that it may give grace to those who hear" — is remarkable: well-chosen words are not merely kind but are themselves vehicles of χάρις (charis, grace), actively mediating the life of God to the hearer. Speech is a grace-delivery mechanism, which is why its corruption is so serious.
