καταρτισμός (katartismos) — "equipping/fitting to function" — carries the physical sense of mending, restoring, and bringing something to its designed completeness (used of setting a broken bone, mending fishing nets in Matt 4:21, restoring a fallen person in Gal 6:1). The three-phrase structure of v12 is debated: if the prepositional phrases are parallel, all three are the direct work of the leaders; if sequential (supported by the shift from πρός to εἰς), the leaders equip the saints, who then do ministry, which results in the body's edification. The F.O.G Message leans toward the sequential reading; the F.O.G preserves the structural ambiguity.
