He works from a personal encounter with Jesus first, then draws on the scholarship of respected Jewish and Christian scholars — because the church was Jewish before it was anything else, and those roots change everything about how you read Scripture.

Footnotes

ἄθεοι (literally "without God," from alpha-privative + θεός) is striking: this was a slur pagans regularly aimed at early Christians for having no visible idols — Paul inverts it against the Gentiles' pre-conversion condition. It does not mean atheist in the modern sense but describes existing amid a world full of gods while absent from the one true God; both versions preserve the blunt, unsparing force of the Greek.
