The *Anakim* were semi-legendary warriors of terrifying stature (Num. 13:33; Deut. 2:10–11), the stuff of collective dread in Israelite memory. The rhetorical question was apparently proverbial — a cultural shorthand for the impossible. Moses raises the fear only to demolish it in v.3 with a greater answer: YHWH Himself crosses over before them. The pattern anticipates every David-and-Goliath moment in Scripture — the impossible adversary undone by a greater Presence.
