The chapter closes with *ḥerem* (the sacred ban) echoing back from v.2, forming a deliberate literary frame. What began as a command to place the nations under the ban ends with a warning: the Israelite who carries banned objects home becomes themselves *ḥerem*—consecrated to destruction. The twin infinitive absolutes *shaqeṣ teshaqtsenu* and *taev teta'avenu* ('utterly abhor it... utterly detest it') are among the most emphatic constructions in Biblical Hebrew, stacking intensity upon intensity. The chapter's whole arc moves from 'destroy them utterly' to 'lest you become them utterly'—closing with the sobering logic that the boundary between conqueror and condemned is moral, not merely military. FOG preserves 'the sacred ban' to maintain the cultic frame; FOG Message uses 'devoted to destruction,' emphasising the consequence.
