The bitter irony is sharpest in Hebrew: Israel will end up serving *elohim*—a word that designates divine beings—but these are *ma'aseh yedei adam* ('the work of human hands'). The fourfold inability (cannot see, hear, eat, smell) systematically denies the functions of life and perception, anticipating the devastating idol polemic of Isaiah 44 and Psalm 115. FOG preserves *elohim* to heighten the ironic contrast between YHWH who speaks, sees, and acts, and these mute fabrications; FOG Message uses the accessible 'gods.'
