The *Urim* and *Tummim* (אוּרִים וְתֻמִּים) were sacred objects housed in the high priest's breastpiece used for divine discernment (Exod. 28:30); their exact form remains unknown — possibly inscribed stones, lots, or tablets. *Tummim* likely derives from *tamim* ("complete, blameless"); *Urim* possibly from *or* ("light") or *arur* ("curse"). Crucially, Levi's priestly entitlement is grounded not in abstract selection but in tested faithfulness — the tribe demonstrated covenant zeal at Massah (Exod. 17) and Merivah (Exod. 32, the golden calf). *Chasid* ("covenant-faithful one") shares its root with *hesed* — steadfast covenant-love embodied in a person.
