The deliberate inclusion of wood-hewers and water-drawers—the most menial labourers—alongside tribal heads and elders makes a radical covenantal statement: the Moab covenant encompasses the entire community without hierarchy of status or origin. These workers may have included Canaanite servants or resident aliens; later tradition associated the role with the Gibeonites (Josh. 9:21–27). The trajectory points toward Gal. 3:28 ('neither slave nor free'). FOG preserves ger ('stranger/sojourner') to honour the legal resident-alien category in Israelite law; FOG Message uses 'foreigner' to emphasise the remarkable inclusion of outsiders within the covenant's reach.
