The terms שְׁגַר אֲלָפֶיךָ (shegar alaphekha, 'the young of your herd') and עַשְׁתְּרוֹת צֹאנֶךָ (ashtarot tsonekha, 'the offspring of your flock') are archaic fertility terms; עַשְׁתְּרוֹת is cognate with the Canaanite goddess Astarte, closely associated with flocks and abundance. By using this vocabulary, the text implicitly claims that true fertility belongs to YHWH alone, not the Canaanite deities Israel was tempted to worship. FOG preserves the agricultural specificity; FOG Message uses familiar English equivalents to honour the pastoral imagery.
