*Mevushaiv* ("his shameful parts") is a euphemism built from the root *bushah* ("shame/disgrace") — a Hebrew circumlocution for the genitals that encodes the cultural weight of the act. This is one of only two laws in Deuteronomy stipulating amputation (the other being contested), and the sole law directly addressing a woman as the subject of a punishable physical act. The law sits within a cluster concerning bodily integrity, family honour, and reproductive capacity — all central to the covenant community's continuity. FOG renders the term plainly to avoid modern squeamishness flattening the text's directness; FOG Message does likewise.
