This verse is remarkable in its explicit, unambiguous exoneration of the woman. The legal analogy drawn — that she is like a murder victim, not an accomplice — removes all ambiguity. The law recognises that coerced sex is assault, not consensual transgression. This stands as one of the clearest ancient legal articulations of what we would today call the principle of non-consent — the woman's innocence is not assumed or implied but stated directly.
