The verb *chillelo* (from *חלל*, to make common/profane) is a technical halakhic term. Under the *orlah* laws of Lev. 19:23–25, fruit from a newly planted vineyard was forbidden for three years, declared holy/set-apart (*kodesh*) in the fourth year, and only in the fifth year became *chullin*—common, freely available for the owner's use. To *chillel* the vineyard is therefore to complete this five-year cycle and taste its fruit as one's own for the first time. FOG preserves 'made it common' to honour the legal texture; FOG Message paraphrases as 'first permitted harvest' to make the experiential reality vivid for modern readers.
