The infinitive absolute construction *hacherem tacharimem* (הַחֲרֵם תַּחֲרִימֵם) is a grammatical intensifier—'utterly and completely devote them to destruction'—but the word *cherem* (חֵרֶם) carries cultic weight far beyond military elimination. Items or peoples placed under *cherem* were sacrally removed from ordinary use and surrendered entirely to YHWH's verdict: they could not be kept, traded, ransomed, or spared. It is the inverse of the holy—what is *cherem* belongs entirely to divine disposal. The six nations listed are those whose entrenched spiritual corruption posed the most acute theological threat to Yisra'el's covenantal identity (cf. v. 18). FOG preserves *herem* as a transliterated term to retain its full cultic resonance; FOG Message renders it 'utterly destroy' for clarity, losing some of the sacred-devotion texture.
