חֵרֶם (herem) — the 'sacred ban' or 'devotion to destruction' — is one of the most theologically freighted and morally confronting concepts in the Hebrew Bible. It designates the total consecration of a conquered people and their possessions to YHWH, most often by their complete annihilation, treating the victory as an act of worship rather than mere military triumph. The concept appears in its most chilling form in Joshua 6-7 and 1 Samuel 15, where failure to complete the herem brings divine judgment upon Israel itself.
